At each milestone of the calendar, it doesn’t hurt to take a few minutes to review the state of your backup systems on a couple of levels. First, how long has the current system been in place? Tape systems are very mechanical and will eventually get tired and either work poorly or not at all. In addition, it’s a good idea to replace your tapes every few months depending on your rotation scheme.
Second, how close to your backup system’s capacity has your data store grown? Each day you add a little more data to your systems. If you are using email extensively, you may be adding more than just a little data everyday. Make sure your system has the room it needs to backup all of your important data. In addition, your overnight backup may be looking to run into the next day if your data store has grown enough.
Third, review the data selections being made in the backup software. Make sure that programs aren’t storing data on local hard drives which aren’t included in the backup set.
