Each week we try to highlight some element of personal computer security. This week is no exception as we’re going to discuss the much anticipated Windows XP Service Pack 2. Most of the time service packs are a necessary, but often unnoticed aspect of operating systems. With the size and scope of XP SP2, Microsoft has virtually rewritten entire parts of the operating system. XP SP2 offers advanced protection which you will notice starting with the built-in pop-up blocker. XP SP2 also offers new features to hinder spyware and protect your email address. Once XP SP2 is installed the Microsoft Firewall is turned on by default. This can affect programs which transfer data from the Internet such as FTP programs. In fact, Microsoft just released a list of almost 50 software products which have encountered problems after XP SP2 was installed. The list includes some commonly used anti-virus software from Symantec and several products from Microsoft, itself. Since XP SP2 will be delivered via Windows Update to most users, you may not know when you’re getting it. If your computer is performing differently and you need help, please feel free to call your Responsive consultant for answers or onsite assistance.
