AOL Offers Additional Security

by Keith R. Wheeler

9/21/2004

You may remember an article back on July 27th titled “End of Passwords?” in which passwords are supplemented by a code delivered to the user via a pager-like device. The code sent to the device changes every 60 seconds in order to provide the extra security. Even if a hacker or spyware installed a keystroke recorder on a computer, the ever-changing code makes it impossible for the bad guys to access your account. America Online, along with RSA Security, Inc., is offering just such a service as an option. For just $1.95/month after paying a one-time 9.95 fee, AOL users would receive a special PIN code after entering their normal password. AOL explains that the target audience for this service includes small businesses and victims of identity theft. In addition, the security option will also prevent phishers (last week’s article) from acquiring all of the information needed to log in. In all likelihood, other service providers and financial institutions will begin to offer similar services.
