Many small businesses have users that work outside of the home either full time or on a more limited basis. With a new feature which will be a part of the forthcoming Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft is dramatically changing the way users access the server in their main office.
Currently, users typically connect to the server via a VPN (virtual private network) which can require hardware, software, and the specialized configuration to make all of it work. This can be cumbersome and limiting to a certain degree.
With DirectAccess, Microsoft will be offering a complete replacement concept for remote access via VPN. It requires Windows Server 2008 R2 and the upcoming Windows 7. Ultimately, DirectAccess will have a significant impact on the way users can access critical data while also improving the support capabilities of the I.T. consultants supporting small business.
Additionally, Microsoft intends to incorporate its Hyper-V technology into the mix which improves file transfers. All of this will replace the current Terminal Services concept in place now for remote access.
There are many steps between now and implementation of this concept, but it is clearly a strategy with real advantages for small business.
