Adding a Second (or Third or Fourth) Monitor
More displays can make users more efficient

As the prices of LCD screens continue to drop, the adding some additional screen space to your desktop becomes more appealing.  Small business users can really take advantage of the extra pixels when accomplishing their daily work.

In the past, acquiring and configuring an array of computer monitors took serious hardware: both the physical and computer varieties.  Just a few years ago, the idea of multiple displays brought visions of day traders with four huge CRT screens mounted on a heavy-duty rack.  The graphics cards and drivers needed to allow the use of multiple monitors were complex and cost-prohibitive for most small businesses.

The physical aspects of current displays improve the installation process.  The lighter weight of LCD displays allows for easier wall mounting if a vertical configuration was desired.  More importantly, adding a second LCD to a regular desktop is easier due to the thinner footprint LCD screens need.

Naturally, the financial factor has a significant impact on the small business acceptance of technology purchases.  The prices of LCD screens have been dropping consistently to the point where a name-brand 19” screen is available for under $200.  An additional graphics card for a desktop PC can be purchased for under $50.  Computers running Windows XP already have the ability to recognize and configure two or more displays.

All of this technology can certainly add a “hip” factor to a user’s desktop.  However, small businesses want results for their technology investments.  How does a second monitor make a small business user more productive?  First, most users use more than just one piece of software.  Imagine being able to see the spreadsheet with the details of the estimate that came via email as well as the bid form, proposal, or bookkeeping program all at the same time.  The ability to see more than one web browser at the same time can be a tremendous time saver when comparing two different products or services.

To discuss the benefits of multiple displays with a small business computer consultant, contact Responsive Network Services LLC online or call 866.RNS.8300.  Some configurations are more complex than others depending on several factors from the age of the current equipment to the type of software at use in the small business.
